Storyline

On the last day of his visit to the Central African Republic, the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres told the members of the national Parliament that the UN peacekeepers in the country are “forces serving Central-African people and they have no other agenda but the wellbeing, the survival and security of the Central-African people.”

In his address, Guterres said the UN peacekeeping force in CAR, known under its French acronym MINUSCA, “has demonstrated its worth while sacrificing lives of a number of Blue Helmets. Indeed, we are aware that we need to re-enforce and improve its operating capacity. Peacekeeping operations save lives and in a certain case they can even save a country.”

The UN Secretary General also promised to be “extremely firm in fighting all abuse.

He also said “I can guarantee you that the zero tolerance policy towards sexual abuse is for me a question of honour.”

Guterres then travelled to the PK5 area, a traditionally Muslim part of Bangui that has been the site of violence against the community.

He listened to the concerns of community leaders, including issues regarding safety and discrimination, as well as the lack of economic opportunities for young people. He also heard from local Christian leaders who spoke of reconciliation.

The Secretary-General underscored his deep belief that religious conflicts are often the result of political manipulation and not religious differences, noting that for years, Christians and Muslims had coexisted peacefully in the country.
