Ethiopia has launched the civil registration for refugees allowing over 883,00 refugees in the country to legally register with authorites.
Refugees can now receive birth, death and marriage certificates, as well as divorce decrees, a historic first and ground-breaking development that will give refugees better access to services like education and healthcare, and better opportunities to rebuild their lives.
The first refugee child to receive a birth certificate in Ethiopia was a 18 days-old Angakuny.
Her mother Ariat, a refugee from South Sudan said “it will be very important for him to have this document to ensure his access to services, like education. Whenever he faces a situation when he will require a legal document, he will have his certificate.”
All refugee children born in Ethiopia will get their birth certificates, retroactively, including around 70,000 refugee children born over the past decade across the country.
