Tree of Survival

What has happened in the Sahel in the ten years since the enormous drought in that part of Africa was on the front pages of the world? This poetic film, full of images of melancholy, tells us that although the problems on the borders of the Sahara no longer make headlines, the ever-encroaching dunes refuse to go away.

Trees, sorely needed to halt the desertification of the Sahel, are also the only source of energy of an ever-growing population. The delicate ecological balance is in mortal danger. There are efforts to reverse these trends with the help of international assistance but the key to success lies with the people of the Sahel. Only the future will tell who will be the winner, the Sand or the Sahelians.
