UN human rights chief Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein said El Salvador has the highest rate of gender-based killings of women and girls in the region adding that the country “is facing enormous challenges from the point of view of confronting gun violence and femicide.”
Zeid spoke Thursday (16 Nov) at the conclusion of a two-day visit to El Salvador, marking his first official visit to the country. He visited a women pre-trial detention facility, where he spoke to women who were convicted of aggravated homicide in connection with obstetric emergencies and as a result are serving 30 years in prison. Zeid said he was appalled by El Salvador’s absolute prohibition on abortion.
Twenty-five years after the end of the civil war, the UN human rights chief described the country as a functioning democracy. He expressed hope, despite the human rights challenges, and added that there was political will in the country to address them.
