This attack, the worst on UN peacekeepers in recent years, is a reminder of the extraordinary sacrifices made by these brave women and men every day.”

The United Nations Security Council condemned “in the strongest terms the outrageous, deadly, and totally unacceptable attack” on UN peacekeepers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) which has resulted in the death 15 Tanzanian peacekeepers and the injury of at least 53 others.
Speaking at the Council today (08 Dec) Japanese ambassador Koro Bessho expressed the Council’s condolences to the family of the victims and to the governments and peoples of Tanzania and the DRC, and wished a speedy recovery to for those injured.
Bessho, whose country is currently presiding over the Security Council, said “those brave peacekeepers were operating under a mandate given by this Council in order to provide a more secure future for the people of the DRC” adding that the Council commemorates “their ultimate sacrifice in the cause of peace.”
Following a closed meeting on the attack, deputy Japanese ambassador Yasuhisa Kawamura said the Council condemns all attacks and provocations against the peacekeeping mission in the country known as MONUSCO. Reading a press statement on behalf of the Council, Kawamura said such attacks could constitute war crimes under international law adding that the Council iterated its full support to the mission in implementing its mandate. He said the Security Council “paid tribute to the peacekeepers who risk their lives daily in the service of global peace and to protect civilians.” He stressed that this attack, “the worst on UN peacekeepers in recent years, is a reminder of the extraordinary sacrifices made by these brave women and men every day.”
