Storyline

During an event at UN headquarters in New York to commemorate the Human Rights Day, UN chief António Guterres reaffirmed his commitment to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and pledged to raise his voice, take action and stand up for the rights of the peoples

Welcoming a yearlong celebration of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the UN Secretary-General António Guterres reiterated that the document stipulates every government has a duty to enable all people to enjoy their inalienable rights and freedoms.

He said “wherever we live, whatever our circumstances or our place in society, our gender or sexual orientation, our race or religion or belief, we are all equal in human rights and in dignity.”

Guterres also noted that “lasting peace and security can never be achieved in any country without respect for human rights.”

He took the pledge which was initiated by the UN Human Rights Office by saying “I will respect your rights regardless of who you are. I will uphold your rights even when I disagree with you. When anyone’s human rights are denied, everyone’s rights are undermined, so I will stand up. I will raise my voice. I will take action. I will use my rights to stand up for your rights.”

The UN chief reaffirmed his commitment in human rights, including by speaking out for those in need, promoting justice for all, and by ensuring that human rights are integrated throughout the work of the United Nations.

On human rights for migrants, Louise Arbour, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for International Migration said “there is still today unfortunately significant wide spread hostility towards migrants, irrespective of their status in many countries. During the event, an actress performed as Eleanor Roosevelt bringing the audience back to 1949, the first Human Rights Day. She explained the urgent need of the Declaration and how it was finally being recognized by countries.

The UN on Sunday (10 Dec) kicked off in Paris, France, a year-long campaign to honor the foundational human rights document, which next year marks its 70th anniversary.

UDHR70 campaign, is a yearlong celebration to mark the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, in its birthplace, Palais de Chaillot.

On 10 December 1948, world leaders gathered to adopt unanimously the Declaration, the first document to recognize what have become universal human values: equal dignity and worth of every person.
