During his visit to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), UN peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix on Tuesday (19 Dec) said “we are determined to continue our mission, to lead it with more determination and resolution.”

The United Nations (UN) Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, accompanied by the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) military adviser, Lieutenant-General Carlos Humberto Loitey, visited Beni where he had a security assessment meeting in the area with Sokola 1 Commander in the North Kivu, and the Commander of the Intervention Brigade.

Lacroix also talked with Tanzanian troops in their base in Beni. He took the opportunity to remobilize and comfort the Tanzanian troops whose base was recently attacked.

The delegation also visited the Semuliki camp to see the ongoing reconstruction work.

Speaking to reporters, Lacroix said "we have a strong thought for the brave soldiers who were killed or wounded in this place. Obviously coming here raises a very strong emotion, but there is also the satisfaction of seeing that this base, which had to be abandoned very briefly, was very quickly recaptured by MONUSCO and that the work of reconstruction, of fortification is taking place and that's very important."

He added “it shows that we are determined to continue our mission, to lead it with more determination and resolution. And I would like to thank all the units, all the soldiers who are here today, who contribute to this recovery, all the engineers, the different military sections who are here and who are doing this very important work. "

The Under-Secretary-General visited the Tanzanian troops based in Kamango which is about 20 kilometers from Semuliki.
