Refugees in Lebanon are more vulnerable than ever.
58 per cent of refuge household are living in extreme poverty.
An increase of five per cent from last year.
They can’t afford all their food, rent, health and transportation needs.
Abdul Latif came with his family to seek protection in Lebanon.
His baby girl is four months old.
SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Abdul Latif Al Sayouf, 28-year-old Syrian refugee:
“I received two mattresses and two blankets. They are essential for the winter. It is better than sleeping on a blanket.”
But even refugees like Mohammad who work, are struggling.
87 per cent of refugees are in debt.
SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Mohammad Abdel Karim, Syrian refugee from Aleppo:
“I borrow money most of the times…We cut down on food, clothes and other things so we can secure other needs such as school transport and health expenses.
Almost 185,000 refugee families will receive UNHCR winter assistance.
Vital help for refugees with so many unmet needs.
A major UN study has recently shown that over three quarters of Syrian refugees in Lebanon now live below the poverty line. Borrowing money to pay for food, rent, school and health expenses remain common among refugees like Mohammad who says he depends on borrowing and his seasonal job in a strawberry field to help provide for his family. Additional funding and donor contributions in 2018 are required to keep Syrian refugees afloat.
