The Russian Ambassador told the Security Council today the United States (US) and the United Kingdom (UK) “hastily accused” the Syrian Government for a recent chemical attack “without any shame and prior to any evidence,” adding that “now they are attempting to drag Russia into this as well.”
Speaking to the Security Council today (23 Jan), the Permanent Representative of Russia to the United Nations (UN) Vassily Alekseevich Nebenzia proposed an “establishment of a new international investigative body which on the basis of irreproachable and corroborated information received from transparent and credible sources would be able to establish evidence for the Security Council to identify perpetrators in the use of chemical weapons.”
The US Ambassador Nikki Haley said that her country will ensure those who used the chemical weapons will be held accountable for their atrocities.
Hayley reiterated “we are not going to accept any Russian proposal that undermines our abilities to get to the truth or the politicizes that need to be independent and impartial investigation.”
She added “if they want to work in good faith towards that goal, we are ready to reestablish the JIM with its original independent and impartial mandate right now.”

According to reports, at least 20 people were killed Monday (22 Jan) in a chemical weapon attack in East Ghouta, near Damascus. The US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson today in Paris called out Russia for protecting the Syrian Government for using chemical weapons against its civilian.
