7. SOUNDBITE (English) Filippo Grandi, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees:
"It's very important that donors support our appeal. Last year, unfortunately, only 21 percent of the refugee needs were met by contributions to the appeals, which meant that we had to mobilise core resources to top up this figure. And yet, many important needs remained unmet.”

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Filippo Grandi, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees:
“Food rations were cut in many of the neighbouring countries. Women that are exposed to violence, often, in this tense context could not be provided with the necessary support - protection support - and therefore continued to suffer from sexual and gender-based violence in spite of efforts. And access of children to education, and sometimes even first aid relief, was difficult to mobilise because of the lack of resources. So, definitely, our appeal this year is to remember one of the most forgotten refugee crises in the world.”

Storyline

UN refugee agency (UNHCR) chief Filippo Grandi appealed today for international support for Burundian refugees describing their situation as “one of the most forgotten refugee crises in the world.”

UNHCR and its partners are asking for 391 million USD for 2018 to support Burundian refugees in neighbouring countries. Grandi said “only 21 percent of the refugee needs were met” by contributions to last year’s appeal. This pushed the Agency to mobilise core resources, “and yet, many important needs remained unmet.”

UNHCR said since 2015, more than 400,000 refugees and asylum-seekers have fled Burundi, escaping human rights abuses, continued political uncertainty, and the related humanitarian crisis. Tanzania is the largest refugee host for Burundians with 254,000 refugees, while 89,000 are in Rwanda with another 44,000 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and some 40,000 in Uganda. Smaller numbers have also fled to Kenya, Zambia, Mozambique, Malawi and South Africa.

UNHCR said with increasing humanitarian needs, dwindling resources did not allow assistance levels to reach acceptable standards throughout the region.

Grandi added that the region is facing several humanitarian crises that often overlap which, for all the countries involved, represent additional costs and needs calling on donors to meet these challenges.
