“We have to look at the fact that there have been successful elections, certainly not supported by Al-Shabaab, so there are I think, real progress that has been made in dealing with that threat, but it is still very much a threat.”

“In a situation like the bomb blast that took place back, I guess, in October, I mean, with a large death and injury rate in Mogadishu. I can’t say that we are the first responders, based on the security situation, because at times one of the techniques that Al-Shabaab has used is to target the bomb and then target the responders when they come in. So, you know, what happens is we have to look at what can be done before we respond as part of a larger effort by the Somalis and others to try and get in and help.”

The outgoing Head of the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS), today (8 Feb) said “the progress that we seek will not happen” if support for AMISOM and the Somali security forces is not maintained.
Hubert Price, who is departing Somalia after a year’s tour of duty, told journalists in New York that “progress cannot continue if collective responsibilities are not shared.”
Speaking about the progress made and the threat of the terrorist group Al-Shabaab, Price said “we have to look at the fact that there have been successful elections, certainly not supported by Al-Shabaab, so there are I think, real progress that has been made in dealing with that threat, but it is still very much a threat.”
Recalling Al-Shabaab’s October terrorist attack in Mogadishu, the departing official said “In a situation like the bomb blast that took place back, I guess, in October, I mean, with a large death and injury rate in Mogadishu. More than 300 people were killed in that attack, with hundreds more seriously injured.
Appointed Head of UNSOS in October 2016, Price presided over and enhanced the massive and often complex logistical support operations to AMISOM, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia(UNSOM) and to the Somali National Army during joint operations with AMISOM.
Secretary-General António Guterres today announced the appointment of Lisa Filipetto of Australia as the new Head of UNSOS.
