Asia now has almost two thirds of the world’s people and may double its total by the year 2000. India, China and Japan have approached the issue three different ways. For more than twenty years India has sought to control its population growth with the largest birth control program in the world. Now, India’s government is attacking poverty first, which is seen as the root of its population difficulties. When the People’s Republic of China came into being more than two decades ago it decided to attack its poverty first. Now its population is leveling off. Japan’s post war economic miracle of rapid industrialization brought with it a near zero population growth, but also brought with it all the environmental and social problems that come with industrialization. Now, Japan, like the rest of the developed world, must deal with the two edged sword of inflation and recession.
