“The upcoming elections of 2020 require increased international attention. It would be a great achievement if national, regional and international actors could agree on some kind of roadmap in order to create the necessary preconditions for democratic, peaceful and inclusive elections in 2020.”

“I call upon Burundi’s international partners to strengthen the resilience of the population by addressing the current humanitarian challenges on the ground in cooperation with the government. At the same time, I call upon the Government of Burundi to continue to cooperate closely and constructively with its international humanitarian partners to address the most urgent needs of Burundi’s population.”

United Nations Special Envoy for Burundi said that the political situation in Burundi “continues to be tense,” adding that “only the majority of the party and some other allied political groups are able to conduct unobstructed political activities.”
Michel Kafando, Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Burundi today (26 Feb) told the Security Council “the economic situation is far from improving because of the persistence of the political situation,” and such situation cannot be suitable for credible elections.
The Special Envoy noted that though the security situation in the country “has seen remarkably improvement,” human right abuses and other abuses continually are being reported.
Kafando highlighted that the “single objective guiding the action” for building the country’s future is “to sound the alarm, so that the future being built by the Burundian people will be an effort that all Burundians share, and thus avoid the constant restarts that the Burundians have suffered so much.”
On elections, Jürg Lauber, the Swiss Ambassador and the Chair of the Burundi Configuration of the UN Peacebuilding Commission told the Council “the upcoming elections of 2020 require increased international attention.”
He added “it would be a great achievement if national, regional and international actors could agree on some kind of roadmap in order to create the necessary preconditions for democratic, peaceful and inclusive elections in 2020.”
On the humanitarian front, Lauber called upon Burundi’s international partners to “strengthen the resilience of the population by addressing the current humanitarian challenges on the ground in cooperation with the government. “
