“We seek to bolster accountability of the UN development system both at the country level, and at the global level, through ECOSOC, empowered to hold us accountable and challenge us to do more, together. And we propose a Funding Compact, to give the system the resources and the flexibility that it needs to deliver, in exchange for more transparency and accountability for results.”

The United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres said “we need a global economy that works for all and creates opportunities for all. To rebuild trust, we need to build a fair globalization. The 2030 Agenda is our crucial contribution.”
Speaking today (27 Feb) to delegates at a meeting for development, UN chief António Guterres in New York underlined the importance of finance for development.
He said that the Addis Agenda calls for “scaling up efforts and innovation in leveraging resources and financing for development, adding that “we must also support countries in their efforts to mobilize domestic resources. But that must be accompanied by a stronger commitment by the international community to fight tax evasion, money laundering and illicit financial flows.”
On UN development system, the UN chief highlighted the focuse on building a system that is demand-driven, oriented around achieving results at scale, and accountable in providing support to achieve the 2030 Agenda.
He also emphasized the importance of harnessing partnership.
Guterres said “we seek to bolster accountability of the UN development system both at the country level, and at the global level, through ECOSOC, empowered to hold us accountable and challenge us to do more, together.”
He added “we propose a Funding Compact, to give the system the resources and the flexibility that it needs to deliver, in exchange for more transparency and accountability for results.”
The 2018 ECOSOC operational activities for development segment will take place from 27 February - 1 March 2018 at UN Headquarters in New York.
The segment will look at key elements of the response to the 2016 Resolution on the Quadrennial Comprehensive Policy Review, including the reports of the Secretary-General on repositioning of the UN development system in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the 2018 report of the Secretary-General on QCPR implementation.
