Storyline

A group of refugee women from Syria is touring refugee camps in eastern Lebanon to empower women like themselves to stand up for their rights.

They met at a UNHCR-supported focus group three years ago. They shared their experiences with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi and the Executive Director of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Henrietta H. Fore, on International Women’s Day.

It changed their lives.

An experience they enthusiastically shared with the heads of two UN agencies.

“The course we are giving is very important for refugee women. It makes them aware of their rights and it pushes them to keep going. What they’ve been through shouldn’t hold them back.”

The women say even if one refugee woman has been helped, they feel they have made a difference.

But they want to reach everyone.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Sham, Kholoud’s Daughter:
‘’On International Women’s Day I have a message for girls my age: continue your education. Learn to say no if you don’t want to get married. Be confident. No one can stop you. You are capable. Be determined.’’

SOUNDBITE (English and Arabic) Kholoud and Sham:
‘’Happy Women’s Day!”

This year’s International Women’s Day comes on the heels of a powerful global movement for women’s rights, equality and justice. Its theme – “Time is Now” – comes at the right moment.

And it also echoes UNHCR’s firm commitment to uphold the rights of women and girls, and to ensure that our work to secure protection and solutions for displaced and stateless people takes full account of age, gender and diversity.
