Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Cambodia, Yasushi Akashi, feels optimistic about the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC) simple because he sees no other alternative but to succeed. He says that after more than 20 years of strife, the post-war period has all the external conditions for national reconciliation, with the UN there to serve as a catalyst for this, a catalyst both needed and welcomed by the Cambodian people.
