The Security Council today requested the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals to present its latest progress report by 15 April 2018, including in completing its functions.

In presidential statement S/PRST/2018/6, presented by Karel Jan Gustaaf van Oosterom (Netherlands), Council President for March, the 15‑member body also requested detailed schedules for the proceedings currently under consideration, and factors relevant to projected completion dates for cases and other matters over which the Mechanism had jurisdiction.

The Council requested the Informal Working Group on International Tribunals to carry out a thorough examination of the Mechanism’s report, as well as the report on the evaluation of its work methods by the Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS), due to be submitted by 31 March 2018.

The Council emphasized the importance of successfully relocating acquitted persons and convicted persons who had completed their sentences, noting with concern the Mechanism’s problems in that regard.

The Mechanism was created in 2010 to carry out the remaining functions of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, which closed, respectively, on 31 December 2015 and 31 December 2017.
