Jan Eliasson, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, discusses United Nations efforts in the area of humanitarian work. Striking a balance between national sovereignty and providing humanitarian assistance is the key to the success of any operation. He says that sometimes the work is difficult and dangerous. For example, in Somalia, chaos is disrupting the humanitarian assistance to the needy Somali people. He calls on governments to lend the UN their goodwill and diplomatic support to enable the world Organization to carry out its humanitarian programmes.
