Sanctions Against Iraq

Austria’s UN Ambassador, Peter Hohenfellner, who is in his second year as Chairman of the Committee on Sanctions Against Iraq observes that while sanctions are a painful process, they will continue until Iraq provides the requisite information on its nuclear, chemical and biological weapons and complies with other relevant Security Council resolutions. Meanwhile, there must be a balance between effectively administering sanctions and meeting the legitimate needs of Iraq’s civilian population so as to lessen human suffering whenever possible.
