Margaret Anstee, United Nations Coordinator of International Cooperation for Chernobyl, stresses the need for international assistance to tackle the economic, social and psychological needs of the victims of the 1986 Soviet nuclear accident. Continuous monitoring the health, water, food and other natural resources is a priority to detect the radiological impact of the disaster on the population of the affected areas. The Chernobyl experience, Ms. Anstee says, demonstrates the importance of international cooperation, particularly in matters relating to nuclear safety.
