Salim Lone, Chief of Information for the United Nations’ Africa Recovery Programme, notes that in a world preoccupied with developments in Eastern Europe and the Gulf, it is little known that more African countries introduced multi-party politics in 1990 than in the previous 25 years combined. This, says Mr. Lone, is part of a bigger trend of very far-reaching political and economic reforms taking place on the continent.
