“The Secretary-General is saddened by the passing of Mrs. Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, a leading figure at the forefront of the fight against apartheid in South Africa. She was a strong and fearless voice in the struggle for equal rights and will be remembered as a symbol of resistance. The Secretary-General wishes to extend his deepest condolences to the people of South Africa as well as to her family.”

Secretary-General António Guterres today (2 April) extended his “deepest condolences” after the passing of Mrs. Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.
In a statement read by his spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, the Secretary-General said Mandela was “a leading figure at the forefront of the fight against apartheid in South Africa” and “a strong and fearless voice in the struggle for equal rights.”
He said she will be remembered “as a symbol of resistance” and extended his condolences to “the people of South Africa as well as to her family.”
