The Role of Men and Boys in Achieving Gender Equality

Equality between women and men is a principle of international law, recognized by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. So why is the idea that men and boys have a major role in realizing this principle been given relatively little thought, until recently? What can be learned from the reaction of men in various countries to the greater empowerment of the women in their lives? How deeply rooted is the cliché that ‘boys will be boys’ – that gender behavior patterns cannot be changed?

In this special edition of World Chronicle, hosted by Mary Alice Williams, these questions are discussed by three male experts on the subject of gender discrimination: Craig Mokhiber, of the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in New York; Prof. Robert W. Connell, an expert on men’s gender and masculinities from Australia; and Dean Peacock, an activist for violence prevention and gender equality from South Africa.
