GROWING UP IN WAR

In the last decade, two million children have died in war, and many more have suffered serious injuries and trauma or been orphaned. Protecting the rights of children — one of the UN's top priorities - has always been difficult in times of war, all the more so in those conflicts where an estimated 300,000 child soldiers continue to be recruited and used. What international standards are there for recruiting young people into the military, and for having them serve in combat? Can the UN deal with child combatants who are recruited by rebel groups, not national armies? Is enough being done to help former child soldiers resume normal life?
