UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi visited the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), urging the international community not to forget about the plight of millions of displaced people across the region.
During the four-day trip, the High Commissioner met with refugees who found safety inside the DRC, as well as displaced people inside of the country. He called for renewed global efforts to find solutions to the complex displacement crises affecting Congo and its neighbours
The Democratic Republic of Congo hosts over 540,000 refugees, while also having several million people internally displaced and over 700,000 Congolese living as refugees in neighbouring countries. During his visit to the country, UN High Commissioner for Refugees offered praise to the country for continuing to keep its borders open, while also acknowledging the large number of displaced Congolese inside the country. The High Commissioner called for more global attention and funding for one of the world’s most complex, and forgotten, humanitarian crises.
