On the second day of their official visit to the Central African Republic (CAR), the United Nations Under Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, and African Union Commissioner for Peace and Security, Smaïl Chergui, met Wednesday the country’s head of state, Faustin-Archange Touadéra.
They notably raised the issue of violence in the capital’s district called PK5, which has resulted in several deaths since Sunday, April 8, including one Rwandan blue helmet.
After the meeting, president Touadera said "we exchanged on orientation and their support for the Central African Republic. And as you know, we have not failed to mention the issue of km5, which today for us is not a question of religion, it is a question of policing and security.”
Earlier in the morning, Jean-Pierre Lacroix and Smaïl Chergui had been received by Prime Minister Simplice Sarandji, where the recent events in PK5 also dominated the agenda.
Lacroix said after the meeting "I'm very grateful to the Prime Minister for expressing his support for the Minusca and his condolences after the deaths of our two peacekeepers who were killed to protect the population. I remind you that Minusca acted those recent days as it always does to protect the population, and in this case, at the request of the population.”
The UN Peacekeeping Chief and African Union Commissioner for Peace and Security were then welcomed in the National Assembly, where the violence in Bangui was also discussed.
Smail Chergui said "If there are still criminals who hold hostages populations I think it is quite natural that the law now can prevail.”
In Bangui, Smaïl Chergui and Jean-Pierre Lacroix also co-chaired the first meeting of the International Support Group for the CAR to encourage the international community to re-engage in the peace process and meet the urgent humanitarian needs of millions of people in the region and the country.
