Storyline

Briefing reporters on her recent trip to Myanmar, UN Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator said “protecting the most vulnerable people in Myanmar must be at the heart of the humanitarian response by the international community, national aid organisations, and the Government.”

During her visit to Myanmar, the Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator, Ursula Mueller observed first-hand the impact of the crisis in Rakhine State and the conflict in Kachin and Shan states. She also discussed ways to improve the humanitarian response.

Mueller noted that in Yangon and Nay Pyi Taw, she met Myanmar’s State Counselor and Minister of Foreign Affairs Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and the Ministers of Social Welfare, International Cooperation, Border Affairs, and Defence.

On her meeting with the State Counselor, Mueller said “we discussed the importance of ending conflict, and of strengthening peace and reconciliation efforts.”

She added “in this meeting, I reaffirmed the commitment of the United Nations to support peace, stability and development in Myanmar, and offered the continued support of the United Nations and its humanitarian partners, to ensure that all people affected by conflict and natural disasters get the humanitarian protection and assistance they need.”

Mueller also said that more funding is urgently needed for Myanmar humanitarian response plan for 2018, “which calls for 183 million US dollars to meet the needs of 832,000 people in Rakhine, Kachin and Shan States.”

Apart from nearly 700,000 Rohingya refugees who have fled across the Myanmar border, a further 400,000 are living in “dire situations” at home, without access to healthcare or education.
