Marina has been displaced twice as shells continued to rain down on her village in Donetsk, eastern Ukraine. Now she must make do in a ramshackle shelter, caring for four generations of family while hoping peace will allow them to pursue happier and safer lives.
The town of Krasnohorivka lies close enough to the line of contact separating the Donetsk region’s rival sides that it has sustained continuous damage from the conflict. Almost two-thirds of its 15,000 residents have fled, along with most jobs, and several schools have shut down, forcing children together into the remaining building, studying in shifts. Shelling continues to plague villages on the militarized dividing line that now cuts through Donetsk, even four years after the start of the conflict.
Marina and her family have moved from house to house to avoid the bombs.

“We lived there for almost two years. The shells kept falling all around us until the wall of the house came down. Half of the house crumbled.”
In a nearly abandoned “red zone” on the edge of town they found the safest place possible, In a house with no running water, and no windows left.

Marina now provides for four generations of family from grandmother to grandchild and her three children.

Life is a daily battle in a conflict which is forgotten by most of the world but continues to claim victims, forcing one and a half million people from their homes.
Marina is striving to beat the odds. She found a job, working 12 hours a day, earning 75 US dollars per month, and works hard to transform a dark place into a loving home.
For 9-year-old Dasha, her mom is an everyday hero.;
SOUNDBITE (Russian) Dasha Baban, Marina’s Daughter:
“This is a portrait of my mom and I made it for her for International Women’s Day, and I gave her this card.”
Marina holds on to a vision of a better future.

UNHCR support has helped Marina to offset costs of everyday life, but only peace can bring eastern Ukraine in from the cold.
