And the support by MINUSMA to the G5 force is also about medical evacuation and MEDEVAC, CASEVAC.”

Storyline

The Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, today (25 Apr) called for pledges made in support of the G5 joint force to be “disbursed and made available to the G5 as quickly as possible so that the momentum can continue and G5 force can continue in the process of beefing up its capacity.”

Flanked by representatives from the European Union (EU) and G5 Sahel Force Lacroix said, “the G5 has made a lot of progress towards operationalizing the force”, but “ore needs to be done,” particularly in relation to the role of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) in support of the force.

The Under-Secretary-General said the role of MINUSMA is “about life support, rations, fuel; it’s about support in building camps, which is something that requires more resources, and as I said, more predictability,” as well as Medical Evacuations (MEDEVAC) and Casualty Evacuations (CASEVAC).

The Group of Five (G5) Sahel States – Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger, as well as the African Union, created the force on 16 February 2014 at a summit in Nouakchott, Mauritania. It is tasked with combatting jihadist organizations operating in the region.
