Student Videoconference on Slavery Remembrance
Speakers: Prof. Christian Crouch, Associate Professor of History and Director of American Studies, Bard College; Hossam Younes, RIBA and Associate AIA, Project Architect at Rodney Leon Architects and member of the design team for the Ark of Return, The Permanent Memorial to Honour the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade; Mahammed Naguib Soomauroo, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Republic of Mauritius to the United Nations, A. Missouri Sherman-Peter, Permanent Observer for the Caribbean Community to the United Nations (CARICOM); Kimberly Mann, Chief Education Outreach Section, DPI The event opened with presentations by Mr. Younes and Mr. Soomauroo, followed by a keynote speech by Prof. Crouch on slave rebellions and the abolition movement, milestones in the civil rights movement, and current movements for justice and equality for people of African descent.
Students from Mexico, Tanzania and United States presented their contributions to this year’s topic: “Triumphs and Struggles for Freedom and Equality”, which celebrated the gains of people of African descent from slavery to the present. It also acknowledged the challenges that have been overcome in the movement towards freedom and equality. Ambassador Sherman-Peter led the popular “Did You Know” trivia exercise. The event was moderated by Kimberly Mann, Chief Education Outreach Section, DPI.
