Storyline

UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric called for “unimpeded humanitarian access” to people in need after some 7,000 people were displaced due to military operations in Syria’s Yarmouk refugee camp.

Speaking to journalists in New York today (07 May), Dujarric said humanitarian workers on the group reported that some 7,000 people, 70 percent of whom are Palestinian refugees, were displaced to the towns of Yalda, Babilla and Beit Sahem in Rural Damascus. He said hostilities in southern Damascus since 13 April have resulted in civilian deaths and injuries, as well as the displacement of civilians and the destruction of infrastructure.

Dujarric said the UN and its partners were ready to deliver assistance to people in need those towns, as well as to Yarmouk, “as soon as the conditions allow and access is granted.” He called on all parties, and those with influence over them, “to ensure the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure, and to allow safe, sustained and unimpeded humanitarian access to all in need in line with their obligations under international humanitarian law.”

The UN spokesperson reminded all parties to the conflict that any evacuation of civilians “must be safe, voluntary and in strict accordance with the protection standards under international law.”
