The United Nations spokesperson said today the World Health Organization (WHO) is rapidly scaling up its operations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in response to an Ebola outbreak declared in the country.

The DRC government declared the Ebola outbreak Tuesday (8 May) after lab results confirmed two cases of Ebola in Bikoro region of the Equateur province.

Briefing reporters in New York today, Stephane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General said The World Health Organization is working closely with the Government of the DRC to rapidly scale up its operations and mobilize health partners using the model of a successful response to a similar outbreak in 2017.”

In summer 2017, an Ebola outbreak claimed four lives in Bas-Uélé province.

Dujarric said “WHO plans to deploy epidemiologists, logisticians, clinicians, infection, prevention and control experts, communications experts and other vaccination support teams in the coming days.
