UN VOLUNTEERS

Brenda McSweeney, Executive Co-ordinator of the United Nations Volunteers Programme, discusses the role United Nations volunteers play in assisting many developing countries in a wide variety of technical, agricultural, humanitarian, research and training projects. The UNV programme, says Ms. McSweeney, promotes durable community development through the creation or strengthening of local grass-roots groups involved in activities such as health, nutrition, village improvement and non-formal education. Ms. McSweeney emphasizes that volunteerism is open to men and women of all ages.
