Description

UN PEACEKEEPING OPERATIONS

Increasingly, peacekeeping operations are complex or multi-disciplinary in nature. As a result, coordination by the United Nations system is essential to ensure unity of effort in the maintenance of peace and security. This need has become more pronounced as the Organization's focus shifts from inter-state conflicts to complex crises arising from internal conflicts. The increasing use of multi-disciplinary peacekeeping operations, which combine military tasks with humanitarian assistance and peace-building activities, is a result of this development. On this episode of World Chronicle, Under- Secretary-General Bernard Miyet, from the United Nations' Department of Peacekeeping Operations, discusses the new challenges facing peacekeepers now and in the future.
