WOMEN AND PEACE NEGOTIATIONS

From Dayton to Rambouillet, Arusha to Colombia, it is mainly males who negotiate an end to wars. The justification often given is that the peace table must bring together those who have taken arms, because it is up to them to stop the conflict. While this argument may hold true for negotiations to secure an end to hostilities, it cannot be sustained for the discussions that build the framework for a new society. The process of reconstructing a society emerging from war requires the equal contributions of men and women. Ensuring women's participation in such negotiations enhances the legitimacy of the process by making it more responsive to the priorities of all sectors of the affected population. In this episode of World Chronicle, author Sanam Naraghi-Anderlini, discusses her book "Women at the Peace Table", published by UNIFEM, the United Nations Development Fund for Women. The book finds that when women do participate in peace talks, they contribute new perspectives and make substantial contributions in the process.
