Description

UN YEAR OF DIALOGUE AMONG CIVILIZATIONS

Tolerance is an active principle that thrives on recognition of human rights and cultural pluralism. It is a way of life that allows one to adhere to convictions freely while accepting that others will adhere to theirs. It is the recognition that human beings are diverse and have the right to live in peace with their diversity, while not imposing their beliefs on others. It represents active engagement in democracy and peace. It can help to eliminate prejudgmental attitudes and effectively put an end to violence, extreme nationalism, exclusion and fanaticism. The United Nations General Assembly has designated 2001 as The Year of Dialogue of Civilizations. In this episode of World Chronicle, Glandomenico Picco, Personal Representative of the UN's Secretary-General to the Year of Dialogue Among Civilizations, discusses the challenges facing countries to promote notions of human rights, tolerance and cultural pluralism.
