FIFTY-FIFTH SESSION OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY

The United Nations General Assembly is empowered to make only non-binding recommendations to States on international issues within its competence. It has, nonetheless, initiated actions - political, economic, humanitarian, social and legal - which do affect the lives of millions of people throughout the world. The Assembly comprises all 189 Members of the United Nations and meets in regular session each year from September to December in New York, and thereafter as required. In this edition of World Chronicle, Harri Holkeri, President of the Fifty-Fifth Session of the United Nations General Assembly, discusses the challenges facing the UN in the new century.
