"FINANCING FOR DEVELOPMENT"
How to mobilize resources for development? A summit-level meeting in Monterrey, Mexico, in March 2002 will address one of the most important issues facing the world in the twenty first century: how to improve the lives of people - the real wealth of nations. Development which includes raising national income, lifting literacy rates, providing basic sanitation and a decent standard of living - has taken giant steps forward in the past half-century, but much more needs to be done. To have a real chance of meeting development goals, a stepped-up effort by both developing and developed countries as well as multilateral institutions is required. In this edition of World Chronicle, Ruth Jacoby, a Swedish Ambassador to the United Nations for Economic and Social Affairs, and Co-Chairperson of the Preparatory Committee of the International Conference on Financing for Development, discusses the expectations and the possible outcomes of the forthcoming summit in Mexico.
