How to mobilize resources for development? A summit-level meeting in Monterrey, Mexico, in March 2002 will address one of the most important issues facing the world in the twenty first century: how to improve the lives of people - the real wealth of nations. Development which includes raising national income, lifting literacy rates, providing basic sanitation and a decent standard of living - has taken giant steps forward in the past half-century, but much more needs to be done. To have a real chance of meeting development goals, a stepped-up effort by both developing and developed countries as well as multilateral institutions is required.
