"BANNING NUCLEAR TESTS"

The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty drafted at the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva and adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 10 September 1996, is a culmination of forty years of work to ban nuclear explosions worldwide. The Treaty's preamble stresses the ultimate goal of eliminating nuclear weapons and of "general and complete disarmament under strict and effective international control". In this edition of World Chronicle, Dr. Wolfgang Hoffmann, Executive Secretary of the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization, discusses the achievements of the Treaty since 1996.
