"DEVELOPMENT GOALS: STILL AT THE TOP OF THE UN'S AGENDA?"
When 150 world leaders met at the United Nations for the Millennium Summit in the year 2000, they signed a common pledge - the Millennium Declaration. They agreed on concrete goals: from halving the number of people who live on less than one dollar a day, to halting the spread of AIDS and malaria. And they agreed on a timetable for achieving them. But that was before the war on terrorism - and weapons of mass destruction - came to dominate much of the world's attention. Is the world still interested in fighting a complex war on poverty, disease and ignorance? How can donor governments be encouraged to meet their commitments to improve the lot of the world's poorest people? In this edition of World Chronicle, these issues are explored with the help of Eveline Herfkens, the UN's Executive Coordinator for the Millennium Development Goals.
