World Chronicle 860: Mounir Bouchenaki, UNESCO
"PROTECTING THE WORLD'S HERITAGE"
For nearly three decades the World Heritage Convention has spread its mantle of protection over many of the Earth's cultural and natural treasures. It is one of the oldest international environmental conventions, a visionary legal instrument based on the premise that there are some places on Earth which are of such outstanding universal value that their protection is the responsibility of not just a single nation but of the international community as a whole. In this edition of World Chronicle, Mounir Bouchenaki, Assistant Director-General for Culture at UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, talks about the International Year for Cultural Heritage, being celebrated in 2002.
