“I usually say that if UN fails in Africa, the UN fails. But at the same time that the African leadership, as a basic condition of the solution of the African problems. And so it is clear that for the UN to be able to deliver according to its mandate, the partnership with the African Union is an absolute must.”

“Indeed, the African Union is clearly the most important strategic partner of the United Nations, and this is true in peace and security, as it is true in sustainable development and it is true in human rights, all the areas of activities of the United Nations.”

“And once again, I would like to underline the very important recent decision on IGAD, the extremely important summit that took place in Juba with the presence of President Museveni and al-Bashir, and of course Salva Kiir and Riek Machar, giving us the hope that finally it is possible to overcome this extremely bloody conflict.”

The Secretary-General António Guterres said the United Nations (UN) could not afford to fail in Africa, adding that “the partnership with the African Union is an absolute must.”
He underscored that “the African Union is clearly the most important strategic partner of the United Nations, and this is true in peace and security, as it is true in sustainable development and it is true in human rights, all the areas of activities of the United Nations.”
The UN chief also reiterated that the recent visit by the Ethiopian Prime Minister to Eritrea and its success and the recent decisions by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) on South Sudan give hope that the African continent is moving in the right direction. He said the evident political will by the Ethiopian and Eritrean governments to resolve their problems was very good news.
Guterres arrived in Addis Ababa today (09 Jul) to attend the second annual UN/African Union conference, which he co-chaired with the Chair of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat.
