Storyline

A brand-new police station, constructed by the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) with the help of a local NGO, Women Aid Vision, was handed over to the South Sudanese National Police Service on Thursday (19 Jul), opening doors of optimism for improved security for the local community.

The new police station is located near the Protection of Civilians sites in Juba, South Sudan’s capital. The Check-Point community leader, Joseph Akol Machar, expressed the community’s gratitude towards UNMISS.

SOUNDBITE (Juba Arabic) Chief Joseph Akol Machar, The Check-Point Community Leader:
“Today I am happy for opening of the police unit. And I call upon the civilians, especially the IDPs and the entire community outside, this is a unit that will guide us all, those outside and those inside. We should support the police.”

After the crisis in South Sudan in July 2016, safety conditions in Juba deteriorated significantly. A number of incidents including rapes, robberies, killings and random shooting continued to take place, affecting the safety and security of the local community and internally displaced people.

To help curb these incidents, UNMISS began to construct the police station in March 2018 under its quick impact projects programme.

Akol Machar believes the new police station will bring more protection of the local civilians.

SOUNDBITE (Juba Arabic) Chief Joseph Akol Machar, The Check-Point Community Leader:
“This will protect the civilians who normally move from the POCs to the market, and back to the POCs. Some of these IDPs fall victims of night kidnaps, which was not bad. From today, I assure you that the security will be good, and I thank you all”.

Unaisi Lutu Vuniwaqa, the UN Police Commissioner of UNMISS, led the handover ceremony, emphasizing the significance of the new police station.

“This police post should be a symbol of trust and confidence in the community, to ensure public order, tranquility and safety within the locality.”

Emphasizing the need to bridge the gap between the police and the community, she said it was necessary to make sure that community members have the confidence to come forward and report crimes, and to assist the police in their work.

The Check-Point Police Station is meant to improve the visibility and accessibility of the police, to enable them to effectively respond to the needs and concerns of the communities that they serve.
