Storyline

During her visit to Somalia, the top United Nations official for gender equality and women’s empowerment Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka on Sunday (19 Aug) highlighted the efforts made at national and local levels towards greater representation of women in political structures and processes, and encouraged further progress in the country.

SOUNDBITE (English) Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Executive Director, UN Women:
“As UN Women we would like to do more work with other UN agencies of course but also with the state Ministry, with civil society, with the private sector so that together we can have a bigger impact.”

Mlambo-Ngcuka visited Baidoa, the interim capital of Somalia’s South West State (SWS). She was part of a delegation led by the federal Minister of Women and Human Rights Development, Deqa Yasin.

There, they met with the acting president of the federal member state, Hassan Hussein Mohamed, cabinet ministers, female members of the SWS regional assembly and civil society representatives.

Somalia is due to hold ‘one-person, one-vote’ elections in 2020 and, in the lead-up to the polls, is undertaking a constitutional review process aimed at determining the resource- and revenue-sharing relationship between the federal government and the federal member states, defining the status of the national capital Mogadishu, and identifying which powers will be reserved for the federal government and which powers will be set aside for the federal member states.

The regional assembly also boasted the largest number of female legislators among the country’s federal member states with 31 women members.

“It is important to have women in decision making structures, but it is also very important for women that when women are their they distinguish themselves. Because as you know as women wherever we are we still have to fight for our contribution to be recognized.”

The UN Women chief also paid tribute to aid workers on the occasion of the World Humanitarian Day while she was in Baidoa.

SOUNDBITE (English) Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Executive Director, UN Women:
“My message to our humanitarian workers is to say thank you for the sacrifices they make and for their dedication to our communities who are targets of violent people and extremism, we are there with them every step of the way.”

Mlambo-Ngcuka also called on colleagues, Somali government partners and invited guests to observe a minute of silence for the passing of former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, who died at the age of 80 on 18 August.

On Saturday (18 Aug), soon after arriving in Somalia for her three-day visit, Mlambo-Ngcuka met with the Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire and the Foreign Minister Ahmed Isse Awad in the Somalian capital, Mogadishu, as well as with women representatives from the business community, politics and civil society.
