United Nations peacekeeping mission (MINUSCA) in the Central African Republic (CAR) today condemned the attack on its peacekeepers in which one Burundian Blue Helmet lost his life.
The attack took place Thursday (23 Aug) evening village Pavika in the center of the country when, presumably, so-called anti-Balaka militants opened fire on a UN convoy. MINUSCA peacekeepers from a base in Pavika were then sent to reinforce the convoy’s security only to find themselves ambushed by the anti-Balaka on the way. In exchange of fire, a peacekeeper from the Burundian contingent was killed.
The mission has denounced “in the strongest terms this heinous attack” against the Blue Helmets and called for attackers to be brought to justice.
