“Being only the fourth woman to occupy this position in the 73 years of the life of the United Nations, I would like to reiterate that I dedicate this presidency to all women in the world; to all women in politics; those struggling to access jobs on equal terms; women and girls who are victims of violence; to girls and adolescents who demand access to quality information and education.”

“We must be aware that this Organization still has many challenges and there are many pending issues. Some of these debts are beginning to be settled, as it has been to tackle the migratory phenomenon through an internationally agreed instrument, which will, without a doubt, be one of the most important milestones to be witnessed during this session.”

Storyline

Addressing the opening of the 73rd session of the General Assembly, incoming President, María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés, as only the fourth woman to assume the role, dedicated her presidency to “those women who have entered politics; who are demanding equality in the workplace; those women and girls who are victims of violence; to those girls and adolescents who demand access to quality education.”

Espinosa said the Organization “still has many challenges and there are many pending issues.”

She said, “some of these debts are beginning to be settled” and pointed out the migratory phenomenon which has been tackled “through an internationally agreed instrument, which will, without a doubt, be one of the most important milestones to be witnessed during this session.”

The greatest indicator of success, she said, “will be the well-being of people, in their daily lives and in their future prospects. This impact will ultimately be what will make the United Nations continue to be relevant and valuable to the world.”

In his address to the GA, Secretary-General António Guterres said “at a time of fragmentation and polarization, the world needs this Assembly to show the value of international cooperation.”

The General Assembly’s General Debate will take place from 25 September to 1st October. The theme for this year is "Making the United Nations relevant to all people: global leadership and shared responsibilities for peaceful, equitable and sustainable societies.”
