“Throughout his tenure Kofi Annan urged us never to be bystanders in life. He summoned us all to act against bias, brutality and bloodshed. He was a multilateralist through and through, a true UN-blue believer in a rules-based global order. And, I must say, his loss cuts even deeper because we have never needed that faith and inspiration more. Kofi Annan called the United Nations the “last best hope of humanity”. He burned with the flame of human rights, dignity and justice. We shall miss him every day.”

He was a leader who left us bereft with his passing but has provided us with a remarkable legacy that will endure forever and continue to inspire.”

The United Nations family paid tribute today (21 Sep) to former Secretary-General Kofi Annan, who passed away last month at 80 years of age.
Annan, a Ghanaian diplomat was elected twice as the UN’s top diplomat and held the post from 1997 to 2005
Annan championed everything from stronger human rights and peacekeeping operations around the world, to revitalizing the UN itself by insisting on creating a new dynamic deputy chief role, an effective ethics office and the mantra of zero tolerance for sexual exploitation.
Speaking from the General Assembly podium, Secretary-General António Guterres said Annan “urged us never to be bystanders in life.”
Guterres said Annan “summoned us all to act against bias, brutality and bloodshed. He was a multilateralist through and through, a true UN-blue believer in a rules-based global order. And, I must say, his loss cuts even deeper because we have never needed that faith and inspiration more.”
Former Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who succeeded Annan in 2005, said “I am confident that history will show, as the years pass, that Kofi Annan was a monumental leader. He was modest, yet simultaneously commanding. He was a leader who was deeply rooted in his past, yet possessed a colossal, illuminating vision for our collective future. He was a leader who left us bereft with his passing but has provided us with a remarkable legacy that will endure forever and continue to inspire.”

Under Annan’s stewardship, leaders committed their countries to meeting the Millennium Development Goals by 2015 - the precursor to today’s Sustainable Development Goals, and he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on the way.
