Storyline

Speaking at a United Nations high level meeting on drug problem, the United States President Donald Trump said “all of us must work together to dismantle drug production and defeat drug addiction.”

On the eve of the 73rd United Nations General Assembly, the United States, together with 31 other countries, has organized a meeting on the “Global Action on the World Drug Problem” which got some 124 countries to sign up to support the global coalition to combat drugs.

Speaking at the meeting, the US president said “as the 2018 World Drug Report highlights, cocaine and opium production have hit record highs, incredibly and global deaths caused by drug use have increased by 60 percent from the year 2000 to 2015. So, in 15 years has gone up 60 percent. Which is absolutely terrible.”

Trump also said “illicit drugs are linked to organized crime, illegal financial flows, corruption and terrorism. It’s vital for public health and national security that we fight drug addiction and stop all forms of trafficking and smuggling that provide the financial lifeblood for vicious transnational cartels.”

The president explained that in his country “we are taking aggressive actions: securing our borders, supporting law enforcement, devoting record funding to the opioid crisis and promoting treatment and recovery.”

Trump further said “all of us must work together to dismantle drug production and defeat drug addiction. For this reason, last month, the United States announced a global call to action on the world drug problem. The call is simple: reduce drug demand, cut off the supply of illicit drugs, expand treatment and strengthen international cooperation.”

For his part, the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said “national priorities may differ, but the global community shares a common goal, to protect people’s security, health and wellbeing” adding that “the United Nations system – and I personally – stand ready to support governments in meeting the challenge of the world drug problem.”

The signatory states of the joint declaration committed their countries to “implement the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, the Convention on Psychotropic Substances, the United Nations Convention against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances, and the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime.”

They also pledged to “develop national action plans which will aim to: reduce demand for illicit drugs through education, awareness, and prevention of abuse, expand treatment efforts to save lives and promote recovery, strengthen international cooperation across judicial, law enforcement, and health sectors and cut off the supply of illicit drugs by stopping their production, whether through cultivation or manufacture, and flow across borders."
