“Freedom from torture is an absolute right in all circumstances, in all countries. It is shocking that in spite of this universal ban, the tools of torture continue to be trade across the globe. It is time to match the global consensus on the need to eliminate torture with concrete action to end this trade.”

“Under the convention against torture, States must prohibit and reframe from torture. And they must also take effective steps to prevent it, to allow this product to be made because the eventual victims living in another country is not an option. This is particular clear for the items which are inherently harmful. Battens with medal spikes, electrify thumb screws, electric chuck belts and others. They are designed purely for torture and have no legitimate use.”

“Argentina firmly believes that the moratorium is essential to encourage more and more countries to work towards a full ban. We need to look at other forms of penalty and punishment to make sure that mistakes that have been made can be reversed. More and more countries are becoming aware that torture and capital punishment don’t have the persuasive effect that we seek.”

“Our further activities should direct to taking measures to restrict the export of goods intended for torture, or execution, encouraging countries to adopt relevant legislations, exchanging best practice as well as creating a cross boarder information exchange platform for costumes of authorities to better monitor trade flows of such products.”

Speaking at a meeting on torture-free trade, UN Human Rights chief Michelle Bachelet said “freedom from torture is an absolute right in all circumstances, in all countries,” adding that “It is time to match the global consensus on the need to eliminate torture with concrete action to end this trade.”
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet also told the delegates in New York today (24 Sep) that “under the convention against torture, States must prohibit and reframe from torture. And they must also take effective steps to prevent it, to allow this product to be made because the eventual victims living in another country is not an option.”
She added “this is particular clear for the items which are inherently harmful. Battens with medal spikes, electrify thumb screws, electric chuck belts and others. They are designed purely for torture and have no legitimate use.”
Argentinian Foreign Minister Jorge Faurie said that “Argentina firmly believes that the moratorium is essential to encourage more and more countries to work towards a full ban.”
Faurie reiterated that “we need to look at other forms of penalty and punishment to make sure that mistakes that have been made can be reversed. More and more countries are becoming aware that torture and capital punishment don’t have the persuasive effect that we seek.”

This is the first Ministerial Meeting of the Alliance for Torture-Free Trade, it was organized by the European Union, and the Permanent Missions of Argentina and Mongolia.
