“Well, it’s about showing first of all recognition and indeed appreciation for what our UNMISS colleagues are doing in a very difficult situation. And it’s also about expressing solidarity, the AU, the UN solidarity, with the people of South Sudan; and listening to colleagues, listening to the authorities in South Sudan, listening to the South Sudanese on how we can work together so that peace will come back to South Sudan. There is a glimmer of hope now with the peace agreement, but we know much more needs to be done, and we are here to see how we can help that.”

“What we take away from this discussion is that with more women in UNMISS, and with more women in our peacekeeping operation, we are better at engaging with the population. We are better at creating trust, confidence, and therefore we are better at building peace.”

“This mission to me is a mission to tell all of us in Africa, that the dream of silencing the guns in Africa is here, and it is up to us to really take it – take the bull by the horns now, in South Sudan, to make sure that this region which has been dubbed the Great Lakes Region of conflict, becomes the Great Lakes Region of peace and prosperity.”

A joint United Nations-African Union delegation arrived at South Sudan for a three-day to support peace efforts in the country.
The delegation arrived on Sunday (08 Oct) and included UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka and UN peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix.
South Sudan’s development has been stunted by ongoing conflict over the past five years, but there is hope that a peace agreement inked in Ethiopia on September 12th would stem the tide of violence across the country, which has resulted in the displacement of more than four million people.
Lacroix said the joint mission is about showing appreciation for the efforts of UN peacekeepers in the country (UNMISS) and expressing solidarity with the people of South Sudan. He said the officials were visiting to see how all those involved could “work together so that peace will come back to South Sudan.” He added, “There is a glimmer of hope now with the peace agreement, but we know much more needs to be done, and we are here to see how we can help that.”
Female UN police and military personnel held discussions with the joint-delegation where the need for increased numbers of women serving in peacekeeping missions was stressed.

The African Union’s Specioza Wandira-Kazibwe, who is also the chairperson of the African Women’s Network on Mediation – FemWise, said she wanted to encourage the women of South Sudan and tell them to join men in the struggle to develop the country.
She challenged South Sudan’s leaders to end the conflict and work together for peace.
